Narrative Writing – Task 5

Description of Narrative Writing
Narrative writing tells about story that happen in the past. Narrative Writing relates a clear sequence of events that occurs over time. Both what happens and the order in which the events occur are communicated to the reader. Effective narration requires a writer to give a clear sequence of events (fictional or non-fictional) and to provide elaboration.

How is Narrative Different from Other Writing Genres ?
In this part I would like to try to explain the differences between narrative and expository. Narrative writing, put simply, is telling a story. The narrative tells about an event or events, the people who participated in them, and how each person was affected by them. Expository writing, it's purpose is - hopefully - to inform, instruct, and explain a process. It's the writing style to use in articles, and in letters, reports and academic papers. Expository writing should be clear and succinct, with a logical word progression, so there's no place here for flowery language.

How to Make a Narrative Writing
1.  Structure your introduction so that it grabs the reader's attention. It should also make a point. The introductory phrase should be short and interesting, state a thesis and tell why the story is significant.

Example :
Long time ago a remote village, in central China was inhabited mainly with farmers and hunters. One day, a poor farmer lost his entire livestock to flood. He prayed hard to God for help or his family would die of starvation.

2.  Write the main body. The main body can have as many paragraphs as you want, but it should have at least three. Each paragraph should cover one idea and follow a logical pattern. The easiest way to do this is to put the events in chronological order.

Example :
Few days later, an old man with long grey beard, passed by his house took pity on him. He gave him a goose and said “ I don’t have any expensive thing to give you and hope this goose will help you to ease your hardship.” A week later to almost surprise the farmer found and egg in his yard. This was no ordinary egg. It was a golden egg. He was suddenly overcome with joy.

3.  Sum up your narrative with a conclusion which is just as important to your story as the introduction. If you don't feel comfortable summarizing the idea of your story, you can end with plans for the future or a rhetorical question.

Example :
Thereafter, his livelihood had rapidly improved but the farmer had forgotten his earlier hardship. He became lazy, arrogant and spendthrift.

Showing The Topic Sentence in Our Narrative Writing

“ Loss of Concentration”
Loss of concentration in a volleyball game while still in elementary school is one of the biggest failures I have ever experienced. Eight years ago when I was in grade 5, after the end of semester exams are always held inter- school sporting events. The first day of the match, the volleyball team of my school match with elementary school’s volleyball team from another village, at that time it all goes well without any errors during the match.
The next day is the same, me and my friends are trying to show a good game. Thanks to the efforts of other friends that I could play well in the next game as well. As a captain, I should have tried to be better than the others, because there are all the responsibility of the captain. Strive to continue to without complaining it should be done in order to play better in every game. While in the last game, me and my friends trying to play quietly and trying to give a good game so we can win against a volleyball team from elementary school that has always been our rivals in every volleyball match. Before the game I was trying to calm down in order not to panic and nervous against them. To be honest, they are not an easy opponent for me and my friends. We have the considerable differences, both in ability and height. Despite that, we always managed to get a good result against them, even though we have not won against them once, but can hold them with a balanced outcome is always the best effort we gave and did.
But at that time, we lost. And that we can defeat was purely a mistake that I did when the game in the second half. The previous value can be balanced, but the time of entry into the middle of the second half, I did a very fatal mistake, which resulted in a defeat for my school for the first time. Although there is no one who scold or blame me, but still, my school team lost in the final match due to an error that I did. I should be able to concentrate under any circumstances, but I just lost concentration at crucial moments.
Because of that mistake, my school lost the game, as a captain I should have been responsible for it. Since then, I resigned from the team, and no longer participate in the game. Lose concentration during a match is very disappointing, both for myself or for the others. No matter how the game is being undertaken, should not lose concentration. That's the thing that I regretted till this day.
